Join our summer walk – renew your sense of internal sustainability

On Sat. July 20th hop on a train with some other like-minded sustainability practitioners and spend the day exploring on foot the beautiful countryside of the South Downs. Enjoy some delicious food at the lunchtime pub, while hearing from the inspirational Darius Norell of the Spring Project around the topic of how to maintain your own personal motivation and sense of purpose in the face of a hectic, demanding world.

“When we think of sustainability we often think of the external, the environment or other people.
What about the internal?
What about what is going on inside our own hearts and minds?
What would it mean for our thoughts and words and actions to be sustainable at the level of self?” – Darius Norell

The plan for the day (Sat. July 20th) is to meet outside the Leon restaurant to the right of the main ticket office in Victoria Station at 9.45 to get a train to Hassocks where the walk starts. This is an exhilarating walk along the South Downs Way, a ridge of chalk grassland with panoramic views inland and out to the sea by Brighton. On the way up to the ridge the walk passes Butcher’s Wood and the still working Clayton Windmills. On the South Downs way we’ll pass medieval dew ponds and an iron age fort at Ditchling beacon.
We plan to stop for lunch at the Half Moon pub at Plumpton, where Darius will give his short talk after lunch. We’ll then return to the downs, following the river Ouse past it’s norman castle into Lewes with it’s ancient high street, where we’ll hop on a train back to London. We should be back in London for around 6pm.

Places are very limited due to the capacity of the lunchtime pub, so we’re asking you to secure your place by pre-paying for your train ticket. Please dress warmly and bring waterproofs in case it rains.  You’ll need footwear that is comfortable and that can cope with puddles and mud.  Ideally hiking boots, but as this walk is mainly through fields and woodland, comfortable wellingtons or even runners should be okay as long as you don’t mind the chance that they might get a bit muddy.

Hope you can join us!
