Aiming to “make sustainable solutions and products fashionable, desirable and inspiring,” Sustainia’s annual list of 100 sustainable innovations is an invigorating relief from the usual doom and gloom.
Full of fascinating and inspiring ideas, this year’s round-up includes innovations ranging from seawater greenhouses to Timberland’s Design for Disassembly boots and Repair Cafés.
To make the list innovations must not only demonstrate positive environmental and social impacts, but also be financially viable, readily available and scalable. Sustainia, a Copenhagen-based business and think tank alliance, whittled down over 500 entries spanning sectors from fashion, buildings and transportation to education, food and health.
From the list of 100 a winner will be announced at a ceremony on November 7th. The prize committee is led by none other than Terminator turned Gubernator turned Sustainator (?!), Arnold Schwarzenegger. The musclebound former bodybuilder is joined on the panel by former Norwegian PM Gro Harlem Bruntland, EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard and IPCC chair Rajendra Pachauri.
Last year’s winner, UK-based Azuri Technologies, received the prize for their pay-as-you-go solar power solution that allows off-grid communities in developing countries to pay for clean energy using scratch cards. You can watch Schwarzenegger introducing the 2012 Award here:
