Snact now to tackle food waste
Food waste has been getting a lot of press recently. Globally, it’s estimated that 1/3 of the food we grow is wasted, and in the UK approximately 2 million tonnes of fresh fruit and veg get thrown away before reaching shop shelves. The statistics can make for depressing reading, especially when we consider that food poverty is still a growing problem in the UK. Luckily, an increasing number of organisations are doing fantastic work tackling this issue. So much so that we are considering forgiving 6-Heads co-founder Ilana for leaving us to dedicate her time to setting up her new business venture Snact. The business is named after the delicious and healthy fruit jerky snact they produce made from fruit that would otherwise be thrown away.
Michael and Ilana, Snact’s co-founders, started their adventure by visiting London’s wholesale markets, picking up unwanted fruit at the end of the end, turning into fruit snacks in a rented kitchen in Hackney Wick, and then selling them at markets and pop-up events. Now, the pair has outsourced their production to a manufacturer in Kent to be able to process much larger quantities of surplus fruit. The company is now launching a 2.0 version on the back of a successful crowdfunding campaign.
I like to think of myself as a devoted Snactivist (the charming name they give to their supporters), this summer I went on the Snact treasure hunt, I contributed to their kickstarter campaing and I own Snact branded pants for poverty. One of the best things about having creative friends working to solve important problems is not only do they support great causes but they also produce delicious snacks for you to eat along the way – and I can tell you: they are very delicious, not to mention very addictive. That said, snacts are 100% fruit, with no additives or preservatives and count towards one of your 5 day so who cares how many you eat anyway?
This week, Snact launched an office subscription model (or “snactscription” as they call it) where you can get snacts delivered to your office each month. On top of acting on an environmental issue, this subscription model will enable them to create employment opportunities for people who’ve been affected by food poverty.
Check out their website’s snactscription page to find out more about the model, and how you can get your hands on some. You’ll get healthy treats for the office and know that you’re helping tackle food waste and food poverty at the same time!
6-heads is a platform that we would love you to be part of. If you have a project you would like to share with our community, an event you would like to host (we can support you to run one) or an idea you would you can’t wait to blog about then definitely want to hear from you. In the new year we are looking to organise a Sustainable Food event. Please email me at louisa.harris@6-heads.com for more information on any of the above.
