Join 6heads this Saturday for Earth Hour, turn the lights off and make a pledge for the world

At 8.30pm on Saturday the 30th March the world should go dark for WWF’s Earth Hour. For this hour hundreds of millions of people switch off their lights to show they care about our planet.

earth hourWe will be turning the lights out and having candlelit dinners with our friends and families to talk about our brilliant planet and what we can pledge to do in the year ahead. What will you do?

What is Earth Hour?

It’s not, as many people may think, an energy saving ploy (though a whole load of energy is saved, calculations pending)! It is about people from across the globe coming together to create a symbolic and spectacular lights out display and asking for change! More importantly it’s about thinking beyond the hour and what we can pledge to do differently.

Starting in Samoa, a Mexican wave of darkness will spread across the globe before ending in Tahiti. Even many of the world’s iconic landmarks switched off including the Sydney Opera House, The Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Times Square and even the International Space Station! Although not as iconic, we will all be switching our lights off this year and would urge you to also.

Turning the lights off to shine a light on environmental issues

Earth Hour gives a powerful voice to people everywhere who want to put the world on the path to recovery. Each year, millions of people around the world switch off their lights and organise events – at home, in their community or in their towns or cities – to show they care about the future of our planet.

How Earth Hour helps

Many of us feel powerless in the face of overwhelming threats to the planet. But when we all come together for Earth Hour, we create a strong voice that can change things for the better.

The power of our combined voices has already helped to:

  • Influence climate policy in Russia, Argentina, Ecuador and Wales.
  • Successfully push for planet-friendly laws, such as a ban on plastic in the Galapagos Islands.
  • Inspire the world’s first Earth Hour protected forest in Uganda.

And 90% of people who take part in Earth Hour say it inspires them to do more to protect the planet.
